One of the world's most beloved operas returns in a beautiful and highly praised production from San Francisco Opera. The innocent Butterfly catches the eye of a feckless American Naval officer, Pinkerton, who makes her his temporary "wife." Soon his time in Japan is over and he abandons Butterfly. When he does return, he arrives with his American wife. Dishonored, Butterfly is bereft. For more than a century, audiences have been thrilled by Puccini's haunting, poignant music and touched by the lovely Butterfly, who gives up everything for love. Two acclaimed American sopranos sing Cio-Cio-San: the charismatic Ana María Martínez, one of the most sought-after lyric sopranos of our time, shares the role with Catherine Naglestad, known for her "ravishingly beautiful singing" (Opera News). Russian tenor Alexey Dolgov and Brazilian tenor Thiago Arancam share the role of Pinkerton. American baritone Michael Chioldi and Korean baritone and former Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Hyung Yun share the role of the American Consul, Sharpless. WNO's General Director Plácido Domingo conducts select performances of this timeless classic, joined by conductor Philippe Auguin.
